Historic Downtown Area
Take a leisurely walking tour of the historic downtown district (circa 1880). You may pick up a self-guided touring map at the Tourism Office. Stop by our specialty shops along the way and visit with our friendly merchants and citizens.
Reenactor’s Camp Site – Battle Reenactments
Pawnee City Historical Society & Museum presents the annual Civil War Reenactment which takes place on the last weekend in September. The weekends’ events include battle reenactments, soldier and civilian encampment, demonstrations and free horse drawn buggy rides from the parking lot to the museum site. The Civil War encampment, located on the property, is open for guests to tour and visit with the Reenactors. Last weekend in September.
Pawnee City Historical Society & Museum
The Pawnee City Historical Society & Museum is located on the east edge of town right off Highways 50 & 8. Visit the home of the first Governor of Nebraska, David Butler, a log cabin, general store, blacksmith shop, chapel, library and more.
An excellent source of information for your genealogy needs, offering Pawnee County school and burial records, with access to over 500 digitized pictures available for reprints.
On display in the 19 buildings are over 20,000 items of antiques and memorabilia, including a 1600 piece salt and pepper shaker collection and a barbed wire collection with 800 different types of wire.
The Pedal Clinic
Proprietors Bill and Elsie Sunneberg invite you to stop by and view the 500+ tractor, car and airplane pedal toys ranging from 1938 to present day. Bill has painstakingly restored each one to a work of art. Also on display are antique toys, doll carriages, salt and pepper shakers, and quilts. For tours please call Bill and Elsie at 402-852-2655.
Heavenly Treasures Quilt Store
Located in a hundred year old building that was formerly the First Baptist Church and was converted into one of the area’s most unique quilting and fabric stores. People from all over the Midwest travel to Pawnee City to enjoy what owner Marie Glenn says it is the “best little quilt store this side of Heaven”.
